DIY Air Freshener Hack: Using these scented flowers will leave your home smelling like the world’s best-selling perfumes

With only 7 seconds to make a good first impression, scent is scientifically proven to be one of the first things we notice when we meet someone new or enter someone’s home.

And with the global fragrance industry predicted to earn $59.87 billion in 2024, perfumes are a huge part of peoples’ daily routines, with four-fifths (81%) of women and more than half (56%) of men wearing fragrance on a daily basis (source) - so it’s only natural that we’d want our homes to smell as good as the luxury perfumes we wear.

As such, our team at Euroflorist has studied the top 5 best-selling global perfumes right now, and shared the flowers that you can include in a bouquet to capture the scent in your home, as well as the extracts you can use in a DIY air freshener.

What are the best scented flowers?

When it comes to the best scented flowers, we all have our individual preferences.

However, for a fresh floral scent, there are many flowers that can offer this, including hyacinths, freesias, gardenias, roses, and sweet peas. If you’re on the lookout for some strong scented flowers, the tuberose is said to have one of the most powerful scents - especially in perfumery.

So if you’re creating a bouquet, or a DIY air freshener at home for a fresh and fragrant smell, consider  incorporating some of these.

How to make your home smell like the world's best selling perfumes

The flower experts at Euroflorist have studied the world’s top 5 best-selling perfumes to reveal how you can capture their scents in your home using flowers and their extracts:

1. Dior - J’adore

With notes of orange blossom, jasmine grandiflorum and centifolia rose, Dior’s J’adore fragrance is dubbed as the grand feminine floral by the House of Dior.

To bring the scent of J’adore into your home through flowers, we recommend incorporating orange blossom, jasmine, and cabbage roses together into a bouquet, or, use these essential oil scents in your DIY air freshener.

2. Frederic Malle - Portrait of a Lady

Turkish rose, raspberry, black currant, and cinnamon, as well as touches of clove, patchouli, sandalwood make up Fredreic Malle’s Portrait of a Lady fragrance.

A bouquet made up of damask roses will capture the main scent of this perfume, and a mix of salvia blackcurrant flowers and carnations will bring in the blackcurrant and clove notes that stand out in this fragrance.

3. Kilian Paris - Love Don’t Be Shy

Killian Paris’ Love Don’t Be Shy fragrance includes a mix of notes varying from neroli to orange blossom and even marshmallow - as well as jasmine and rose as the middle notes.

To create a bouquet based on this fragrance, flowers such as jasmine, roses, and bower flowers will help to bring in the main notes, as well as a touch of the sweet marshmallow scent that comes from the bower flowers.

You can even purchase marshmallow essential oils that you can add to your DIY air freshener.

4. Maison Francis Kurkdjian - Baccarat Rouge 540

Baccarat Rouge 540 is one of the most popular perfumes in recent years, with its notes of jasmine facets, saffron, and freshly-cut cedar - and this is another fragrance that has taken TikTok by storm, with videos garnering millions of views.

Baccarat Rouge 540 is also a popular perfume that is duplicated, with many creators promoting the alternatives to save on the expensive price tag.

Geranium is a popular flower known to smell like cedar, so we recommend including this in your bouquet. Alternatively, you can purchase cedarwood essential oils. Some other additional flowers and fragrances include jasmine, and the saffron crocus (also known as the autumn crocus).

5. Ariana Grande - Cloud

Ariana Grande made her mark on the fragrance industry back in 2015 with her debut perfume, ARI, with Cloud releasing in 2018. With its notes of lavender blossom, juicy pear and bergamot, this perfume has stayed consistent in the best sellers list for the past 7 years.

To create a bouquet based on the Cloud scent, include lavender, freesia for the pear scent, or a pear essential oil, and bee balms (also known as monarda) - a common flower known to smell of bergamot.

How to create a DIY air freshener

Creating a DIY air freshener is simple and easy to do, and this can be achieved using only 2 ingredients - bicarbonate of soda and essential oil.

To make your bicarbonate of soda air freshener, simply add one tablespoon of bicarbonate of soda to a small bowl or dish. If you’re planning on displaying the air freshener, you may choose to purchase one that matches your home decor, but any small dish or pot will work the trick.

Then, stir 5 to 6 drops of an essential oil into the bicarbonate of soda with a spoon until it has thoroughly combined together.

The bicarbonate of soda will absorb odours from your home and freshen the air on its own, with the addition of the essential oils helping to add a fragrant and fresh scent to your home.
